It's not unusual for an entire street to be evacuated when police find something suspicious inside of a home. But it's not very often that an entire neighborhood is cleared out.
"When they came pounding, knocking on our door, they said that a liquid was found in the house and we had to be evacuated immediately," says neighbor Connie Tobin.
Thursday afternoon, police knocked on the door of a home on Adornment Court, near Buffalo and Farm Road, for a child welfare check. Instead, they found something much more suspicious. Someone very close to the family called police when they discovered chemicals were being stored inside the garage of the home in question.
"The stuff in the garage belonged to my neighbor, an ex-boyfriend of hers who lived there for awhile," says Mariah Fernandez, neighborhood resident.
That ex-boyfriend moved out last year, but Fernandez says some of his stuff was still locked up in the garage.
"The garage was locked up for quite awhile," says Fernandez. "And when she decided to move, she was able to get through the lock...and get in there and see some stuff that was in there. That kind of worried her."
It also worried police. They evacuated 60 homes in the area and kept people out of their community for more than 12 hours. The local Red Cross took the residents to Arbor View High School for the night.
The scene was cleared around 10:15 am Friday morning and people were let back into their homes. Metro, the FBI, the ATF, and an environmental team are currently handling the investigation.
At this time, the family that lives in the home in question has not been charged with any crime and no arrests have been made. Authorities have not yet released any information regarding what chemicals were found.
